Former Unilever Manager Chooses Woops! Franchise Investment
Our business model and scalability appealed to Boston businessman when choosing Woops! as his first franchise
Bruno Alves was looking for a business investment in the food industry after 15 years in management at Unilever in packaged food goods. He was impressed with the scalability and high-end quality of Woops! after discovering our Natick Mall kiosk in Boston. He ultimately chose the Woops! brand as his first venture into franchising, purchasing two existing kiosks in the Boston market.
“The most attractive thing to me about Woops! was the business model. Handmade artisanal products are usually very hard to scale and difficult to make affordable and achievable to a large number of customers,” says the Boston businessman, who moved to the area in 2015 to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology – Sloan School of Management. “French macarons are difficult to make and to see a kiosk successfully operating in a mall in multiple locations all over the U.S. meant the brand and company is something very special.”
Bruno also found the artisanal uniqueness of Woops! macarons to be very attractive as more consumers seek higher-end products that keep their status without losing their uniqueness. He also was drawn to the culture and leadership.
“The Woops! team is very young and the company has a very nice culture,” Bruno says. “All this combined makes a great concept with a great team.”
Bruno and his wife, Laura, and a business partner acquired two Boston area Woops! kiosks – one in Natick Mall and the most recent location in Burlington Mall. The Boston area is ideal for Woops!, Bruno says.
“The local market is good – it is a combination of a wealthy consumer base that at the same time doesn’t have access to the quantity of options like in New York,” Bruno says. “Boston is a very large market of very well educated and cosmopolitan people from all over the world.”
Bruno’s Boston area kiosks are located about 20 miles apart and he and his wife make a point to be at the kiosks daily. He believes this hands-on availability is critical to success as a Woops! franchisee.
“We are always at the kiosks, even if we are not behind the counter,” Bruno says. “The business goes well when we are closer to the business.”
Bruno has been so pleased with the success of his two Woops! macaron kiosks that he is already researching another Woops! investment.
