Co-owner of a new macaron franchise in Oklahoma City opens up about her big dreams for the business
When an idea takes momentum, dreams can become reality incredibly quickly. This is what Melanie Thomas and her business partner Jennifer discovered when they decided to be the first entrepreneurs to bring Woops! to Oklahoma.
At the terrific speed of two and a half weeks, co-owners Melanie and Jennifer signed their franchise agreement, went through a full training session at our headquarters in Brooklyn, New York, and opened their luxury macaron kiosk in the vibrant Penn Square Mall in Oklahoma City in early December — just in time for the bustling holiday season.
“It was a whirlwind,” Melanie says. “When we decided that we were going to invest in Woops!, we didn’t want to miss out on being open for the holidays, which is the biggest time for retail sales. We went, signed and opened in two and a half weeks. The executive team was incredibly helpful throughout this process, especially during the four day training session, where we learned how easy the business is to run. One of the executive team came to work with us during our grand opening just to be sure that we got off to a good start. They’re extremely accessible and enthusiastic, so it’s been a pleasure to work with them so far.”
Prior to franchising with Woops!, the long-term friends hatched a plan to bring macarons to their community. They looked at a competitor first, but ultimately decided that they wanted a different direction. When they found out about Woops!, they knew the rapidly growing macaron franchise was a perfect match.
“There were several things that impressed us about Woops!,” Melanie says. “We liked their branding much better, as well as the sleek and chic look of the kiosks. We also liked their ability to appeal to a younger audience, and that the brand was actively growing. The executive team was also extremely open, and offered a level of transparency that really impressed us. They want everyone involved, especially the franchisees, to know what the company was doing. There’s nothing going on behind the scenes.”
Of course, when Melanie and Jennifer tasted the macarons, the deal was sealed.
“The quality of our macarons is impeccable and are the best I’ve tried in the United States,” she says. “Woops! is constantly coming up with new flavors and other treats that keep our customers coming back.”
Once their new business is established, Melanie and Jennifer plan to open a Woops! in-line bakeshop in Oklahoma City, where the youthful and educated population would make the venture a surefire hit. In the meantime, the new business owners are focusing on growing their catering business, and beginning to market their macaron kiosks to their community.
“I love it that this product makes people so happy,” Melanie says. “That’s the best part about it. Jennifer and I plan to grow in the near future, but right now, there’s so much to do. We’re doing our first catered wedding this weekend, and we plan to really make that segment of the business blossom. Woops! is a company but it also feels like a family, and I would recommend this to anyone who has a passion for macarons and the entrepreneurial spirit.”
